ATHLETICS - Kierran makes the grade for Wrexham

KIERRAN COOPER headed Wrexham AC's charge at Wigan.
The talented under 13 year old won the Athlete of the Match award with a sensational grade one long jump win of 4.67m at the opening round of the Young Athletes Track and Field League Northern One West match.

He was one of several Wrexham youngsters to celebrate a hat-trick of wins to earn Wrexham second place in the match.

Kierran also added victories in the 100m (14.1) and 200m (28.7).

He was joined by Hannah Thomas, Lindsey Cheers, Chloe Jones, Lydia David who also celebrated winning hat-tricks.

Hannah cleared 1-60m in the under 17 ladies high jump, and claimed wins in both the 100m (13.2) and 200m (26.4).

Lindsey powered her way to success in the under 17 ladies discus (24.01m), shot (7.92m), and javelin (19m).

Chloe grabbed glory in the under 15 girls 100m (13.7), 200m (27.0), and long jump (4.93m) to win the Female Field Athlete of the Match Award.

And Lydia scored her hat-trick of wins in the under 15 girls discus (16.80m), javelin (18.13m), and shot (7.59m).

Tom Cusworth claimed the Male Track Athlete of the Match award after posting a grade two time of 23.5 in the under 17 men's 200m, and he won the long jump with 5.77m.

Megan Rogers just missed out on winning the Female Track Athlete of the Match award despite winning the under 17 women's 300m hurdles in a grade one time of 45.5 seconds.

Tom Keen won the under 17 men's 400m in 53.2, and Gareth Bennett won the B 200m (24.6) and B long jump (5.07m).

David Hooson won the 100m hurdles in 16.7, and Daniel Hodgson cleared 3-30m for victory in the pole vault.

Daniel Williams won the under 15 boys 100m in 12.6 and the 200m in 25.6, while David Blower won both the 400m (61,2) and 800m (2:23.3).

James Roberts rounded 800m in 2:20.0 for an under 15 boys win.

Ryan Jones scored victories in the under 13 boys 75m hurdles (16.9), shot (6.11m), and high jump (1-38m).

Nia Breeze grabbed a hat-trick of under 17 ladies B victories in the 100m (14.2), 200m (29.2), and discus (10.90m), while Phillipa Roberts won the 300m (45.7) and B long jump (4.03m).

Laura Edwards powered her way to success in the B shot (5.36m) and B javelin (14.09m), while Georgina Stockley won the B high jump (1-35m).

Emily McDermott won the under 15 girls B javelin (12.02m) and Katie Keen won the B shot (4.56m), while Lucy Davies grabbed victories in both the B 75m hurdles (14.4) and B long jump (4.40m).

Manon Edwards won the under 13 girls shot (6.95m) and B 70m hurdles (14.3), while Jade Stevens won the B 800m in 3:11.5; Hannah Browning won the 70m hurdles (13.9), and Amy Odunaiya won the B high jump (1-20m).

MATCH RESULT: 1 Macclesfield 370 points; 2 Wrexham 338; 3 Horwich 316; 4 Manx 201.

Meanwhile, Anna Frost finished fourth with a time of three hours 26 minutes 13 seconds at the Three Peaks Race in Horton in Ribblesdale, representing New Zealand in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge over 24 miles.

Charles Ashley finished 42nd with a time of 36:51 at the Y Garn Fell Race, at Rhyd Ddu, Beddgelert.

And Sarah Alice Davies posted 64:17 in her 400m at the British Universities Championships, at Bedford.

* Fixtures this weekend include the Christleton 5k Road Race, near Chester, tomorrow (7.30pm start).

The North Wales Track and Field Championships take place at Deeside Stadium, on Saturday (10.30am start), and the Muller 10k Road Race, at Market Drayton, takes place on Sunday (11am).

Forthcoming fixtures include the Moel Eilio Fell Race (8m/3,000ft) at Llanberis, on Saturday, May 17 (1pm), the second round of the Young Athletes League, at Warrington, on Sunday, May 18, and the Chester Half Marathon, on Sunday, May 18 (9.30am).
