THREE athletes from Wrexham Special Olympics Athletics Team have been chosen to represent the Great Britain Squad in this years Special Olympics Summer Games to be held in Castellon, Spain, in October.
Neil Morris, David Bellis, and Tony Gittins have been selected to represent their country.

Wrexham Athletics Special Olympic squad was only formed in October 2006, and to have achieved this standard so quickly is recognition of how hard the athlet
es and coaching staff have worked during the past 18 months

The athletes will be accompanied by their coach, Stephen Walker.

Anyone wishing to assist in sponsoring the athletes or the Special Olympics club should contact club secretary, Stephen Gittins, on 01978 366596.

Meanwhile, Wrexham AC duo James Mills and Sarah Davies have clinched medals at the British Universities Indoor Athletics Championships.

The pair, both coached by Wrexham's Les Baldwin, represented Bath University at Sheffield.

Sarah ran in the heats of the 400m and later in the day she ran the third leg of the 4x200m relay. An excellent baton change saw Sarah move Bath from second to first but she was just overtaken approaching the final change.

Sarah's outgoing baton change proved to be equally effective, putting Bath back in pole position to win and qualify for the final.

Although Sarah was not part of the quartet from Bath which went on to win the final, she won a gold medal as a member of the squad.

James Mills eased himself through the 1500m heats and semi final.

In the final from 600m out Birmingham's Tom Penfold made the long bid for gold but Mills tracked him for every stride. Penfold won the day with Mills having to settle for silver. Penfold posted 3:49.67, and Mills clocked 3:50.50.

Meanwhile, Anna Frost won the ladies race with a time of 39 minutes 19 seconds at the Moel Wnion Fell Race (4m/1600ft), at Bethesda.

And Mike Robbins secured sixth place with a time of 34 minutes 36 seconds at the Air Products 10k Road Race, Crewe.

He was joined at the event by Emma Parry, who finished third lady and 21st overall with a time of 38 minutes 13 seconds, and Ray Billington, second in the over-70 age category, and 198th overall, with a time of 60:47.

Wrexham AC running ace sisters, Claire Schofield and Ruth Hetherington, were outkicked by three week old Eleanor and toddler Emily who both got personal bests at Wrexham's Sport Relief Mile.

Peter Norman won the over-70 age group prize at the Ras Yr Aran Fell Race at Llanuwchllyn, Bala, in a time of 1:47:37.

Neve Evans won the under 11 girls 75m in 11.9 seconds and Beth Jones was second (12.5) before winning the long jump at the Trafford U15s Medal Meeting.

David Blower was second in the U15 boys 800m in 2:24.5.

Paul Evans was the first of three Wrecsam Tri Club finishers at the Ras Yr Aran Fell race near Bala.

Due to the driving wind and snow and ice on the tops of the mountains, the race had to be cut short from 10.5 miles to 7.5miles for safety reasons.

Other Wrecsam Tri members in action included Shaun O'Keefe in one hour 25 minutes, and Pete Norman in one hour 47 minutes.

* Fixtures this weekend include the Wilmslow Half Marathon, on Sunday (10.30am start), the Tuffnutz 11 mile Endurance Team Race, on Sunday at Thurstaston, and the Newcastle Seven Miles Road Race, at Newcastle, Staffordshire.
