Wrexham suffer Accrington defeat
Wrexham 1 Accrington Stanley 3
WREXHAM suffered a disappointing 3-1 home defeat to Accrington Stanley in their final League game at The Racecourse.
Brian Little's young side started brightly enough, but found themselves a goal behind in the seventh minute after a bizarre mix up between Shaun Pejic and keeper Michael Jones saw the ball trickle into the net off Pejic's back.
The goal clearly shocked Wrexham, and they struggled to impose themselves on the game.
It was no surprise when Stanley doubled their advantage on 28 minutes, when Peter Cavanagh scored from six yards after Jones could only parry haun Whalley's low cross.
Matty Done, who was Wrexham's best player in a disappointing first half, then wasted a golden opportunity to pull a goal back when he shot wide with the goal at his mercy.
Half time saw Little replace Steve Evans and Mike Carvill with Neil Taylor - earlier named young player of the season - and Wes Baynes.
The changes saw an improved performance from the Reds and Chris Llewellyn should have scored shortly after the re-start but he somehow missed the target with just the keeper to beat.
And despite enjoying much of the possession, the Reds fell further behind on 71 minutes when Shaun Whalley broke through the defence and fired home.
There was some consolation for a subdued home support when Neil Roberts - named player of the season before kick off - scored from the spot after Baynes had been pulled down in the box.
The final whistle followed almost immediately, with some of the crowd taking to the pitch as The Racecourse said farewell to the Football League.
